Paracas…Dunes and Buggies

A few days ago I left Lima and headed south. On the way to Paracas, we visited an old Spanish Conquistador’s home. They had secretly kept slaves there and hid them in tunnels under the home. We toured the tunnels and it was very sad to learn the history of this home.

The very small tunnels under the house.

When we got to Paracas, I went on a dune buggy tour of Reserva National de Paracas, near Ica, Peru. The tour started in the town of Paracas where we got in our buggies and headed out on the highway. It was scary at first because trucks were driving past us, but then we stopped at a booth to show our tickets to get into the park. Our guide led us through the park.

Seeing the South Pacific Ocean and the desert meet at the shore was amazing and different. It was interesting because we don’t see that in Rhode Island. We were able to visit a few different view points. It was windy and cold but beautiful. There were vultures flying around the cliffs.

My favorite part of the trip was riding in the dune buggy. I had never been in a dune buggy before and I liked going fast over the dunes. Driving down the dunes, seeing the ocean and the cliffs was incredible.

This video is of my trip through the park.

  1. This reminds me of a ride we took in the sand dunes of  Aruba. It was a bigger vehicle and dustier. Our white shirts were orangy by the time the ride was over, but it was fun.
