Sandboarding in Huacachino

Huacachino is an oasis in the sand dunes outside of Ica, Peru. An oasis is a lake in the middle of the desert. The lake was surrounded by houses and trees and sand dunes.

In Huacachino there is a thing call sandboarding and it is very common there. You can sandboard 3 different ways: 1) you can stand up like you are snowboarding but that is the most dangerous, 2) you can sit down, but that will make you go slower, or 3) you can lay down on your belly and go face first, which is the fastest and safest way. That is the way we did it.

We took a dune buggy to the sand dunes and it was like riding a roller coaster. We went up and down the dunes. Some of the dunes were super steep. We met two people in the hostel and they went on the buggy tour with us. Their names are Megan and Jacob and they are from Australia. At the beginning of the tour, the dunes were really small, but we thought they were giant. We slid down 6 or 7 dunes, each one bigger than the last. Once we got to the last dune it was so steep you could not see the bottom because it was just a straight drop.

We did the last tour of the day so we could see the sun set. It was so beautiful.  There was purple, pink, orange, yellow and red . Once we got down the last dune we had to climb a steep hill to get to the top. It was so hard! Megan, Jacob, my dad, my mom and I were in a buggy together with two other people who spoke Spanish. When we were going back to the oasis it was dark so it was hard to see. I was sitting next to Megan and she was to scared to look so she was covering her eyes the whole time. I thought it was so much fun . My favorite was when we went up the side of the dune and we were basically falling out of the buggy. Then we went straight down the dune. It was crazy.

  1. I take back what I said before – that your dune buggy ride reminded me of when we went jeep riding in the dunes in Aruba. It was NOTHING like what you just described. The roller coaster part really petrified me. I would have been “dead” by the time the ride was over. I do wish I could have seen the beautiful sunset. Thanks for the picture and for enabling us to travel with you vicariously.
