Diving in Roatan, Honduras

Once we left Costa Rica, we traveled to Roatan, Honduras. When we were in Belize, my dad and I did a “Discover Scuba Dive” class, and I really liked it. So my mom signed me and my dad up for a one week Open Water Scuba class in Roatan. We got to the dive shop a day early, so our dive teacher gave us a work sheet to do and videos to watch. Once we watched all the videos, we went to the dive shop and we did some studying and we graded our papers.

After that we got our tanks and BCDs. Then we hooked everything up and we put everything on and we were heading out to shallow water. We got in the water and inflated our BCDs, put our snorkels in and went swimming to a sandy patch on the bottom.

Class often took place at this sandy patch. We would head down to the bottom and our instructors Rachel and Maureen would show us a skill to do, then we would do it. You can’t talk under water so we used hand signals to communicate. We had to do things like 1) out of air situations or 2) your mask fell of and so you have to find it and put it back on.

After we mastered skills in shallow water, we went out on a dive boat for our first open water dive. We jumped in the water and our instructors told us to hold onto the rope that was connecting the boat to the mooring line. We descended holding on to the rope. Once we got down to the bottom we did a couple of skills, and then we swam around and had fun. We saw parrot fish, sea turtles, eels, angel fish and so much more amazing fish and coral. It is the most fun and the most amazing experience I have ever had.

  1. You have always been our little mermaid. Now that mermaid has grown up. Congratulations on passing your tests and getting your Open Water permits.
