Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave

My dad and I went on a crazy cave experience. We went on the ATM cave tour in Belize. The guide picked us up at Lower Dover Farm and he drove us down some dirt roads. When we got to a parking lot, we put on bug spray and then started a hike to the cave. As we were hiking, we found Tapir and Jaguar footprints and had to cross three rivers. Right as we got the opening of the cave, our guide explained the history of the cave.

Next, we jumped off a rock into the cave and then we swam deeper into the cave. We swam and walked through water until we started seeing Mayan artifacts like pots and bowls. Then we walked further until we reached a big rock that we climbed. It was slippery but we got to the top and jumped over a gap and walked up a hill until we reached an open cavern. The cavern was filled with pottery and then the guide pointed to a skull that was calcified in the ground. The skull was there because the Mayans had done human sacrifices in the cave.

We continued to walk until we saw more skulls and also other human bones. Then we reached a little room by climbing a ladder and right away we saw a part of the room was blocked off. Our guide then pointed to a fully intact skeleton of a Mayan woman who was sacrificed in the cave. After the guide explained everything, we headed back, relaxing with the current of the river as we floated out of the cave.

This cave was extraordinary because it is the only cave with a fully intact human skeleton inside. You are not allowed to take photos inside the cave to help protect the artifacts.

  1. No make believe skeletons for you this Halloween! I am glad that you could relax with the current of the river. I would have been too spooked out to relax. Thanks for describing what you saw, since you could not take pictures.
