The Ballestas islands are in the South Pacific Ocean off the coast of Paracas, Peru. We visited them on a boat. On the way to the islands we saw a Nazca line called “The Candelabra”. The line is not actually a candelabra, but a cactus. It is believed that the Nazca chiseled the shape into the side of the cliff.
We went further on the boat to a rocky, bird covered island. The island had penguins that are called Humboldt Penguins. They are named after the scientist and explorer Alexander Von Humboldt who first saw these birds off the coast of Peru. We also saw sea lions that were sleeping on the rocks because the ocean was wavy.
As went went around the back side of the island it got really, really stinky! There was so much guano (bird poop) that people collect it and sell it. Peru and Chili actually fought a war over guano!
We visited several other islands and saw more sea lions, birds, and penguins. The guide told us there were over 50,000 birds on one island. That’s a lot of poo poo! We noticed that half of one of the islands was black and the other half was white. We realized all of the black side was birds.
On the way back we saw a large white and brown jellyfish. When we got back to the dock the fishermen where unloading their fish.
